About FoCal What is FoCal? FoCal is a utility which can fully automatically calibrate the Autofocus adjustment value of your camera and lens combination quickly at the touch of a button! Why use FoCal?

Modern DSLR cameras have a setting – provided by the camera manufacturers – which allows you to adjust how the camera and lens work together to get the best performance. The manufacturers give you this setting in an admission that manufacturing tolerances and day-to-day usage of a camera can affect the performance of the autofocus. The setting is just a number but how do you pick it? There are many different interacting components of the AF system, and you can’t reliably pick the correct value without checking and rechecking your settings. And here’s where FoCal comes into the picture – it takes all the guesswork out of the calibration.

FoCal is computer software you install on a PC (or soon, a Mac), and a special target which you print out and attach to a wall. To use, you connect your camera to the PC with the stadard USB cable and start the software.

FoCal guides you through the correct positioning of the camera with on screen Live View assistance, then you can run any of the tests at the touch of a button. FoCal supports all Canon and Nikon cameras that support AF Microadjustment/Fine Tune – see the requirements page for details of what’s supported for which cameras. Semi Automatic AF Calibration The Semi-Automatic Autofocus Micro adjustment Test allows you to quickly and easily compare the performance of the camera and lens at various Microadjustment/Fine Tune values. You are in control of the settings, but there’s no need to keep changing camera menu items – all this is done for you and using LiveView you get instant results after each change. The quality of each setting is analysed, helping you to choose the next value to test and refine down to the best AF Microadjustment/Fine Tune setting for your camera/lens combination Fully Automatic AF Calibration This is available in FoCal Plus and FoCal Pro onlyThe Fully Automatic Autofocus Microadjustment Test allows you to quickly and easily calibrate the camera body and lens by automatically taking full resolution shots and analysing to determine the best AFMA value, then programming the camera with this value. In good light, the test will calibrate a camera/lens combination in approximately 60 seconds.

As the test runs you can see the progress, the quality of the results, and when complete the final determined AF Microadjustment value. The value is a prediction based on all the results, so it gives you the best value for your camera and lens for real life shooting. FoCal Pro is the big one!
